Common Core Standards: R.L. 6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. R.L. 6.3 Describe how a particular story’s plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution. R.I. 6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings. R.L. 6.5 Analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza, fits into the overall structures of a text and contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot. R.L. 6.7 Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem, to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they “see” and “hear” when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch. Essential Questions: Who are you? How does your community impact you? How does culture impact the way you see yourself and others? What is revolution? What is culture? What is a “cultural revolution”? What are different reasons why people join revolutions and movements for social change? How should resources be distributed in a society? How do societies achieve greater equality among their citizens? How do you create a fair society? What is a memoir? How can memoirs help us understand the past?
Enduring Understanding: Students will know how to interpret and evaluate the influence of culture, ethnicity, and historical eras on themes and issues in literature. Students will know the historical events/climate that provides the framework for the memoir. Students will know that a memoir is based on person’s experiences. Students will be able to identify propaganda and its’ effects. Students will be able to identify the values of their own cultures. Students will be able to construct meaningful and specific individual connections to a text that represents different social, historical, or cultural dimensions.
